POSITION SUMMARY: 
Reporting to the Assistant Manager of School Programs within the Department of Teacher and Student Engagement, the Bilingual Educator-in-Training is responsible for assisting in the facilitation of onsite and occasional distance learning experiences for K-8 students.

The position is part-time (24 hours/week) and runs during the academic year from August 26, 2019 - May 29, 2020. The position provides an in-depth, hands-on experience for people interested in pursuing a career in education. Educators-in-Training will learn teaching techniques, gain an understanding of how to communicate with students of varying ages and backgrounds, and participate in behind-the-scenes organization and projects. This position is open to anyone who fits the qualifications below and is the beginning of a career pathway to working in education. By the end of the position, individuals will be trained in the skills required to become a Bilingual Educator, and should a position be available, invited to apply for that job. This position joins a team of bilingual educators; programs have been running for 7 years.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist staff in facilitating educational programming in onsite classrooms, and in live online classrooms using the Zoom platform
  • Communicate with teachers, students and chaperones bilingually, as appropriate
  • Prepare and maintain supplies, educational materials, classrooms, and work spaces
  • Help organize and refine digital assets, such as images, slides, and video
  • Assist in the behind-the-scenes organization of outreach efforts
  • Participate in staff meetings, and professional learning
  • Contribute to administrative work as needed
  • Follow all Academy safety regulations
  • Other duties as required    

QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required or preferred. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
A qualified candidate will have a combination of the following experience and/or equivalent education:

  • Background in working with children 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Interest in learning about non-traditional learning environments and teaching strategies
  • Interest in natural history and life sciences
  • Prepared to speak to a group of 35 students and their adult chaperones
  • Attention to detail, organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication skills, including written and spoken
  • Openness to new ideas and flexibility to constantly refine programs
  • Basic knowledge of natural history and life sciences
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and google suite applications
  • Willingness to learn and strong desire to support the Academy's mission 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish and/or Cantonese required; including reading, writing and speaking (technical level translation skills not required)
  • Ability to read and understand documents in English such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals.

SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be available Monday-Friday from 8:30am-1:30pm. Shifts will have a consistent schedule from week to week. Occasional evening events may be required. This is a temporary position, employed August 26, 2019 - May 29, 2020.
