POSITION SUMMARY: 
Reporting to the Assistant Manager of School Programs, in the Teacher & Student Engagement Department, this position is responsible for facilitating the Academy's onsite field trip programs and distance learning programs for grades K- 8. The overarching vision for the Teacher and Student Engagement group is that K-12 educators facilitate meaningful, co-constructed science experiences such that students are motivated and able to apply sustainable solutions to their lives. Approximately 20% of classes require some form of language support in Spanish, Cantonese or Mandarin. This position joins a team of bilingual educators; programs have been running for 7 years.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitate educational programming in onsite classrooms, and in live online classrooms using the Zoom platform
  • Facilitate learning with students, families and general public audiences in English and Cantonese or Spanish, as well as those who may not speak English
  • Teach and communicate with teachers, students and chaperones bilingually, as appropriate
  • Prepare, coordinate and maintain supplies, educational materials, classrooms and work spaces.
  • Contribute to the development and production of educational materials to ensure an effective, accessible and content-rich approach
  • Ensure activities and facilitation are culturally relevant and responsive to audience needs
  • Assist in developing and presenting teacher orientations, workshops, and open house events
  • Assist in the coordination of on-site aspects of programming including entrance into the museum
  • Contribute to outreach efforts within the communities served by the program
  • Attend and actively engage in regular staff meetings, programmatic evaluation and staff trainings
  • Provide administrative support as needed
  • Follow all Academy safety regulations
  • Other duties as required 

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
A qualified candidate will have a combination of the following experience and/or equivalent education:

  • At least one year of experience in informal education or a formal classroom
  • Background in natural history and/or life sciences
  • Experience working with English Learners 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent classroom management and public presentation skills; comfortable speaking to groups of 35 people at a time
  • Familiarity with student learning needs and developmentally appropriate expectations
  • Familiarity with the Next Generation Science Standards
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Office and Google Drive proficiency
  • Superb attention to detail; organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication skills, including written and spoken
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Willingness to learn and strong desire to support the Academy's mission

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish and/or Cantonese required; including reading, writing and speaking (technical level translation skills not required)
  • Ability to read and understand documents in English such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals. 

SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be available Monday-Friday from 8:30am-1:30pm. Shifts will have a consistent schedule from week to week. Occasional evening events may be required. This is a school-year position, lasting between August 26, 2019 - May 29, 2020. Towards the end of the school year we will discuss a possible position extension with the employee based on mutual availability and interest.
