POSITION SUMMARY
The On Call Specialty Programs Tour Guide is responsible for providing expertly led tours of the Academy, including, the Behind-the-Scenes Tours, NightLife VIP Tours and After-Hours Tours on an on-call basis. Responsibility may also include working and coordinating Specialty Programs events, including our Penguins + Pajamas Sleepover, Birthday Parties and Corporate events when necessary, as well as lead animal encounters.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Schedule flexibility is a must, based on the variety of programs offered (nights, weekends, and overnight)
  • Deliver highly engaging and informative tours
  • Staff tour cart at least 20 minutes prior to each scheduled tour time.  
  • Engage and entice guests to book tours in order to drive tour attendance
  • Maintain a high level of enthusiasm on each tour while conducting the tour and delivering tour content
  • Facilitate birthday parties and support with sleepover events
  • Deliver the highest level of guest service while preserving the exclusivity of the tour group amidst the general public
  • Meet and interact with Academy VIP guests as requested, representing the Academy in a most professional perspective at all times
  • Attend meetings and trainings as required
  • Abide by animal handling guidelines, following all protocols and procedures
  • Operate and maintain headset technology, and other tour equipment
  • Complete daily reporting and record keeping as related to tours and programs
  • Follow all Academy safety regulations
  • Other duties as assigned 

QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed above and below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
A qualified candidate will possess a combination of the following education and/or experience to succeed in this position:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) or Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college degree or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated experience in public speaking in a variety of settings to different audiences of all ages and sizes
  • Tour guide, docent, or teaching experience preferred 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and passion for science, conservation, learning, and education
  • Ability to speak confidently and comfortably in front of a live audience; employ command of the English language
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of biological science or other related science fields preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to present a high quality tour
  • High energy, creativity and enthusiasm
  • Mobility and endurance required
  • Fluency in etiquette protocol and excellent customer service  
  • Bilingual or multilingual fluency preferred

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  The ability to write routine reports and correspondence is required as well as speak effectively before groups or individuals. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
