POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Manager of Youth Engagement, the main responsibilities of this hourly seasonal, on-call position are to support the supervision, training, and mentoring of all youth participants in the Careers in Science and Teen Advocates for Science Communication programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with onboard training for new youth participants including orientation of Academy, health and safety training, and other in-take procedures
  • Train and evaluate youth on content and presentation
  • Supervise and mentor youth on the public floor
  • Assist with planning, preparation, and implementation of Academy events and trips, including driving if applicable, and overnight travel
  • Assist with administrative needs of the program, including purchasing supplies and materials
  • Assist with the development and delivery of trainings as appropriate
  • Provide logistical support for projects
  • Follow all Academy safety regulations and policies
  • Other duties as assigned 

QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
A qualified candidate will have a combination of the following experience and/or equivalent education:

  • High School Diploma
  • 1 year minimum of college courses
  • Experience working with youth in a formal or informal education program

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be available to work during the academic summer break, including up to 26 hours/week
  • Some supervisory experience preferred
  • Computer literacy required, including competency with Google suites
  • If applicable, clean driving record and willingness and ability to transport youth on field trips
  • Ability to independently complete tasks and projects under an assigned deadline
  • Ability to take initiative
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a group as well as independently
  • Strong interpersonal skills with both youth and adults
  • Good problem-solving skills

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups and individuals. 

MANDATED REPORTER:
This is a mandated reporter designated position. Academy employees whose duties include direct contact and supervision of children are deemed mandated reporters under California Law. Mandated reporters have certain specific reporting obligations in the event that they know of, observe or reasonably suspect that a child has been the victim of child abuse or neglect. The Academy provides mandated reporters with training of their rights and obligations under the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.
