POSITION SUMMARY:
The Audio-Visual Technician is an on-call position. This person is a member of the Experience Engineering team that is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all audio-visual and electronics systems/peripherals to primarily support Special Events, and on occasion Exhibitions, Planetarium, 3D stereoscopic theater and other venues within the Academy. This position reports to the AV Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Setup and/or operate AV equipment to support events and/or exhibitions.
  • Be responsible for equipment, strike after events and organize in our storage
  • Assist with team member(s) to ensure 100% readiness of all audio-visual equipment and peripherals.
  • Troubleshoot/repair AV equipment, if instructed by a lead or supervisor. Follow all Academy safety procedures and maintain a safe and clean work environment
  • Adhere to the Academy Public Floor guidelines for attire, appearance, and behavior
  • Other related duties as assigned 

QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
A qualified candidate will have a combination of the following experience and/or equivalent education:

  • Production degree or equivalent training
  • At least two (2) years of experience in live audio-visual production 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays and evenings, the California Academy of Sciences is open to the public 365 days a year
  • Knowledge of audio-visual components 
  • Computer literate (Windows, Mac, Power Point, Keynote, Flash, iTunes, Windows Media)
  • Ability to perform well before a live audience
  • Ability to successfully undertake job responsibilities without supervision
  • Must know how to recognize quality audio and video
  • Ability to follow supervisor's instructions and ask for direction and assistance when necessary
  • Ability to multi-task, perform detailed work, and successfully complete assignments in a timely manner 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and fully comprehend documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals. Bilingual (spoken and/or written) in Spanish, German, Russian, Cantonese, Mandarin, or other non-English language preferred.
